Homer playing the violin, in the company of a pupil

oil on canvas

unframed: 115.9 x 140.5 cm.; 45 5/8 x 55 1/4 in.

framed: 143.2 x 167.9 cm.; 56 3/8 x 66 1/8 in.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured and dulled. Retouching is visible to the naked eye along all four margins as well as scattered through the paint surface which has developed a distinct network of craquelure and has resulted in some losses in several areas - mainly in the background on the left-hand side of the painting and have been retouched, through the body of the violin and at the end by the pegs, as well as in parts of the scribe's jacket (in which the blue has also suffered somewhat) and in a more concentrated, larger area in the top of the ledge below his hand approx. 12 x 6cm. There is also a retouching in the centre of the sky 2 x 2 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all of these. The paint surface is in need of some further stabilising. The painting is in overall fair condition.

Private collection, Belgium.

The subject and design of this painting are clearly derived from the work of Pier Francesco Mola, such as the depictions of Homer with a disciple in the Palazzo Corsini, Rome (inv. no. 192),1 and in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow (inv. no. F-171),2 as well as those which portray the poet with his eyes closed, such as that offered at Christie's, London, 3 December 2013, lot 33.3
