Baambrugge 1768 - 1820 Amsterdam

A seated Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a standing greyhound

oil on canvas, unlined

unframed: 28.6 x 39.2 cm.; 11¼ x 15⅜ in.

framed: 40.8 x 51.4 cm.; 16 x 20¼ in.

The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. Discoloured retouchings are visible to some fine scratches upper left and lower right, and there are also some small patches of retouching apparent in the background in the centre, just above the greyhound, to the left of its back legs, and upper right, approx. 1x1cm. Inspection under ultraviolet confirms these, and further reveals a small retouching to a pinprick loss in the centre of the spaniel, and to a fine, horizontal line in its hind legs, along with a small area of retouching in the rear of the greyhound. The dogs are largely untouched, however, and the painting is in overall fairly good condition.
