Heriot was the son of a London bookbinder of noble German extraction. He went to Munich in 1829 and, after working in a bank, spent two years living in Venice. He travelled extensively, not only in Italy, but also throughout Hungary and Transylvania. By 1836 he had returned to London and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from that year on. A rare artist, examples of his work are found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
