These devotional studies of saints are stylistically similar to the work of Antonio de Pereda (1611 – 1678).   Pereda was born in Valladolid but his training and style are wholly Madridlenian.  He began his artistic training under the guidance of Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, Marqués de la Torre, who gave the young artist the opportunity to work at the Buen Retiro palace on the decoration of the Hall of Kingdoms.  After the Marqués’s death, Antonio de Pereda discontinued his work at the palace and dedicated his career to religious painting.  For comparable works by Pereda, see: D. Angulo & A.E. Pérez Sánchez, A Corpus of Spanish Drawings: Madrid 1600-1650, London 1977, p. 55, nos. 297, 307 & 308.
