Neptune's Grotto, which is situated below the great waterfall at Tivoli, was an unmissable site for 18th century Grand Tourists. Many artists recorded it, including Jonathan Skelton, Francis Towne, Thomas Jones and Jacob Philipp Hackert. The present work appears to be based on a watercolour by Hackert, now in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg.1
