Sudbury Gainsborough's House, A Peculiarly English Art, English Drawings and Watercolours, 1994, no. 47

The subject is taken from Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, a novel first published in 1768. It shows the principal character, the Reverend Yorick, flirting with a pretty glove seller. The playful cat on the chair symbolises his intentions.

Frith painted two oil paintings of this subject: one was exhibited at the British Institution in 1845, the other is dated 1853.¹

We are grateful to Mark Bills for his help when cataloguing this lot.

1. The first was sold at Christie's, London on 1 December 2016, lot 75; the second forms part of the collection at The Laurence Sterne Trust, Shandy Hall, Yorkshire.
