Thomas Palmer;
sale, London, Sotheby's, 18 April 1996, lot 3 (as Genoese School, 16th Century),
where purchased by the present owner
The figure's stance, with her outstretched arms and her placement in the clouds, might indicate she was conceived as a Madonna in an Assumption.  Cabezalero repeated this figure type in many of his paintings, a type that descended directly from his teacher, Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614 - 1685).  Dr. Zahira Véliz, former curator of the Apelles Collection, has suggested the attribution to Juan Martín Cabezalero, based on the artist's painted oeuvre.  The previous attribution to an artist in the Genoese school is not surprising due to the great influence that Genoese artists active in the Escorial had on Spanish painters.
