circa 1750-1818 Ryde, Isle of Wight

Elegant figures walking towards Northampton House, Camberwell

Watercolour;

inscribed lower centre: Northampton House Camberwell

131 by 206 mm

Nixon was an amateur landscape painter and caricaturist who was in the habit of making annual sketching tours, sometimes in the company of professional artists such as Thomas Rowlandson.

The present watercolour dates to circa 1800, on account of the clothes worn by the elegant figures. They are seen walking towards Northampton House, a mansion built by Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington (1683-1743), and later owned by his nephew James, 5th Earl of Northampton.
