Deer in a forest glade

Watercolour, heightened with white;

inscribed on an old, typed label: In Hainault Forest Aug. 1851

245 by 339 mm

According to an old label, Middleton painted this work in 1851 in Hainault Forest. Hainault lies to the north-east of London and is part of the ancient Forest of Essex. The 1850s was a time of great change for the forest, for in 1851, parliament passed a law allowing for large-scale deforestation of the area and the culling of the herds of deer. Middleton’s watercolour, which is painted in his typical fresh and free technique, would seem therefore to capture a world threatened by the activities of man.
