This watercolour was painted in circa 1839 and relates to a work - dated to that year - in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and to a group of watercolours that Hunt made as a result of a visit to Hardwick Hall, Yorkshire in the late 1820s.1

It has previously been suggested that the lady depicted here is Miss Moore, one of Hunt's pupils. For further information on Miss Moore, please see lot 217.
