George Nikolaus Ritter was a German born painter who worked primarily in the Netherlands.  His artistic output included portraiture, still life and hunting scenes; a self-portrait, of circa 1800-1805, is housed in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow (inv. no. 1229).

The present drawing was, until recently, together with a drawing by Ritter of A Sailor raising a Sail, executed in black chalk and fully signed by the artist.
