The sitter was the daughter of John, Lord Harington of Exton. In 1594 she married Edward Russell, 3rd Earl of Bedford. A lady-in-waiting to Anne of Denmark, she was a patron of artists and writers and a central figure in the cultural life of the Jacobean court.

 

A number of versions of this miniatures survive: one in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420892), one at the Cleveland Museum of Art, U.S.A. (1941.559) and one in the collections at Castle Howard, Yorkshire.
