In 1837, Samuel Palmer married Hannah Linnell, daugther of John Linnell, RA. The couple embarked on a two year honeymoon to Italy where, perhaps inspired by his happy new circumstances, he created some of his finest watercolours.
The Palmers stayed at Corpo di Cava, which lies to the south of Naples near to Salerno.1 Another watercolour of the same scene, from a different viewpoint, is in the collection of the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and another, dated 1844, was last recorded in 1961.2
