Description

Massive Seymchan Meteorite With Naturally Formed Hole

Pallasite – PMG

Magadan District, Siberia, Russia (62°54’ N, 152°26’ E)

363 x 266 x 216mm (14.33 x 10.5 x 8.5 in.) and 48.18 kilograms (106.5 lbs.)

Similar to but far larger than lot 90. Seymchan meteorites originated from the core-mantle boundary of an asteroid that broke apart during early solar system history. Following pinball-like impacts in space, a large mass was serendipitously bumped into an Earth-crossing orbit. Having arrived on Earth thousands of years ago, specimens of the Seymchan meteorite were first discovered in 1967 near the settlement of Seymchan in the Magadan District of Russia — the locality of Stalin’s gulags.

This massive specimen of Seymchan, if cut — which should never occur — would reveal the same Widmanstätten pattern seen in lots 90, 103 and 111. The edges of this form have been softened over time as a result of exposure to Earth’s elements as the seasons turned. A graphite patina with charcoal accents is in evidence. This specimen also features a naturally formed hole at its crown — a great rarity for a Seymchan meteorite and extremely unusual for any iron meteorites of this size. Accompanied by a custom armature and pedestal, this striking conversation piece is a singular extraterrestrial sculpture from outer space.
