Property of a Gentleman
An important and magnificent pair of grey limestone figures of Bodhisattvas, Mahasthamaprapta and Avalokiteshvara
Early Tang dynasty, era of Empress Wu Zetian
each bodhisattva exquisitely carved in an elegantly eased standing posture of tribangha on a waisted lotus pedestal, one holding an elixir bottle in the lowered left hand and the other holding a lotus stem in the right hand, adorned with necklaces and wearing a long draped scarf and a dhoti falling neatly in U-shaped folds above the feet, each face depicted with a benevolent and peaceful expression with broadly arched brows, downcast, lidded eyes and plump lips, flanked by pendulous earlobes, the hair drawn up to a high chignon, one decorated with an elixir bottle at the front and the other centered by a figure of Amitabha Buddha
It is extremely rare to find a pair of bodhisattvas particularly in complete state and not fragmentary. The Avalokiteshvara has a stabilised crack around the neck (together with a small associated restored section to the ribbon) and another to the mid-section, as well as an area of restoration to the left forearm. The Mahasthamaprapta has a stabilised crack to the neck, and the shin and lower arm appear to have been restored. There are otherwise minimal general areas of retouching.
