The following condition report has been prepared by Stuart Sanderson (Paintings Conservation), London:
The structure of the screen is in very good condition, with its original hinges.
There are places where the panels have rubbed against each other producing a
white powdery residue. Over time the inner panels have shrunk revealing the
pale priming where the panels meet the frame. Much of these lines of pale
priming have been retouched. There are limited vertical splits evident in the
veneer, and the occasional knot showing on the surface.
The paint appears to be a commercial oil based paint used to achieve the
"lacquer" finish. This has naturally discoloured over time. Where the paint has
been thickly applied it has dried with wrinkles, and the exuded oil has attracted
some dirt. The paint has dulled over time and there are passages where a dark grey underlying layer is showing through.
Under Ultra-Violet light the retouching of scattered minor chips and abrasions is
apparent. There is a vertical scratch in the upper part of the right hand panel (4),
and some cosmetic retouching of underlying runs in the centre of panel 3.
