Acquired from Chawkandi Art, Karachi on 3 March 2000

Born in Karachi in 1961, Pakistani contemporary painter Unver Shafi Khan is known for the richly colored, anthropomorphic forms that fill his canvases. Khan studied English Literature with art foundation courses at Kenyon College, Ohio, in the early 1980s, and subsequently returned to Karachi where he established his artistic studio and his place within the Pakistani contemporary art community. Khan held his first solo show at Indus Gallery, Karachi, in 1986 and has since exhibited his works widely around the city, including at the 2017 Karachi Biennale. Khan’s works have also been shown in Lahore, Islamabad, Mumbai, Dubai, Hong Kong, Paris and London.

In the present works from 2000, Khan has used opulent color and organic forms to produce three captivating, jewel-like canvases. The undulating lines and ambiguous shapes within these works create chimeric landscapes: Khan’s forms resemble slopes and boulders, yet also the curves and contours of the human body.
