K. Singh, Chittaprosad: A Retrospective 1915 1978, Vol. II, Delhi Art Gallery, July - August 2011, illustration p. 427
Born in Naihati in 1915, Chittaprosad Bhattacharya was a pioneering figure in the development of socio-political popular art in India. He was famed for his political and satirical artistic commentary on colonialism, poverty, and the misuse of power that afflicted Bengal and wider India in the mid-twentieth century. He favored pen and ink, watercolor and print-making as his principal mediums, and his works are marked by their typical monochromatic palette and commanding yet flowing line. The present work, executed in brush and ink, powerfully showcases Bhattacharya’s assured artistic style.
