Alan Carter was a career diplomat with the former United States Information Agency (USIA). He held several senior positions and served tours of duty in Pakistan, India, Japan and Vietnam. He was awarded the Edward R Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy. In India, he served as the Press attaché for two US Ambassadors - Ellsworth Bunker and John Kenneth Galbraith. He, along with his wife, Marge lived in New Delhi from 1959 – 63. During this time, they became close friends with Satish Gujral and his wife Kiran.
