Baroda-based artist Abir Karmakar is known for his voyeuristic, enigmatic works which explore conceptions of identity and intimacy. Born in 1977, Karmakar graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Visual Art from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (2001), and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda (2003). His work centers on domestic interiors, providing his viewer with intimate glimpses into the private lives of his subjects. Some works depict human figures within these scenes, sometimes Karmakar’s own nude body. Others show vacant interiors, in which a profound human presence is felt through the possessions and objects which occupy the space. The current lot from Karmakar’s Angle series is one such work. Ironically, the inhabitants’ absence from the scene, together with the distorted fisheye view and Karmakar’s unique photo-realistic aesthetic, renders Angle V as intensely voyeuristic and intimate as the artist’s nude self-portraits.
