A cloisonné enamel vase

Attributed to Takahara Komajiro

Meiji period, late 19th century,


the tapering vase on ring foot, short neck with wide rim and copper-gilt mounts, decorated overall in various coloured enamels and worked in gilt brass wire with ho-o birds among chrysanthemums on a gold wire scrollwork ground, the shoulder with lappets depicting stylised ho-o birds and flowers

Takahara Komajiro was a Kyoto-based enameller who opened his own studio in 1894. He won a bronze medal at the 1904 St Louis International Exhibition. Writing in ‘Japanese Art and Artists of Today – VI. Cloisonné Enamels; from The Studio, June 1911’ Professor Harada Jirō mentions that Takahara was an artist ‘of some note… who has recently made some considerable improvements in the ware’.
