This design is derived from two allegorical sets of the months that were published by the goldsmith and engraver Étienne Delaune in 1561 and 1568. The present plaque represents the month of July, with the zodiac sign of Leo included in the clouds above. A similarly painted plaque depicting the month of May and signed P.R. is in the collection of the Taft Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio.
