Horatius on the Bridge

inscribed oratio al ponte on reverse

lustered tin-glazed earthenware

6 7/8 by 7 5/8 in.; 17.5 by 19.4cm.

Horatius was an officer in the Roman Army who defended Rome from the invading Etruscan army on the Pons Sublicius, one of the earliest bridges to span the Tiber  River. He miraculously survived and he was able to hold off the Etruscans long enough for his army to destroy the bridge behind him, saving the city from attack.
