enameled copper

with wood core, collection label on underside

This champlevé enamel châsse depicts the Adoration of the Magi with the three Magi riding on horseback toward Bethlehem, following the Holy Star in the top right corner. The main panel below depicts the Magi presenting their gifts to the Christ Child, who is seated on his mother's lap. The blue background, the gilded curved motifs, and the three dimensional heads are typical of champlevé enamels created during the middle of the 13th century. A châsse of similar style decorated with scenes from the Life of Christ is in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (acc. no. 44.247).
