Washerwomen in a landscape, with a group of shepherds before an allée of trees

oil on canvas

canvas: 53 ½ by 36 ⅞ in.; 136 by 93.8 cm.

framed: 64 ¼ by 47 ¼ in.; 163 by 120 cm.

The canvas has an old glue relining. There is a tight craqueleure pattern which can be seen in some areas of the sky but is not bothersome. The canvas is planar and remains in good condition, the paint layer is fresh under an even varnish. There are a number of areas where the paint remains thick and vibrant, particularly in the white highlights in the foreground. The colors are nicely retained through the varnish is slightly dirty. Under ultraviolet light some areas of restoration flouresce, mostly to address thinning in the sky area, particularly the cloud at center left, above the left tree, and some of the darker shadows within the left tree. There is some inpainting to address craqueleure in the architecture in the background and some in the foreground to address areas of thinness, almost exclusively in background areas and not within the figures. The restorations have been carefully applied and are not obvious to the naked eye. Overall the large canvas presents well and can be hung as is. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
