Antonio Mezzadri was a specialist in still life painting active in Bologna in the final decades of the 17th Century. In the Aggiunte alla Bologna perlustrata (1688), the antiquarian Antonio Masini notes that Mezzadri “dipinse frutti, e Fiori benissimo, che sparsi per molte Case della Città sono molto ammirati [paints fruit and flowers extremely well, which are spread throughout many of the households of the city and are much admired]. Indeed, groups of flower pictures by “mezadro” are noted in a number of Bolognese inventories, which attest to his popularity (see R. Morselli, Collezionisti e quadrerie nella Bologna del Seicento Inventari 1640-1707, 1998).
We are grateful to Daniele Benati who confirms the attribution based on photographs.
