The canvases are both lined and stable on their stretchers. The first image reads better than the second due to the brighter color palette, but both are legible beneath slightly discolored varnish. Both canvases have spots of repair visible to the naked eye, such as two repaired compound tears measuring about 12 inches each to the left of the first elder in the first canvas, and a large discolored spot of retouching on the first daughter's back in the second canvas. Under UV inspection, the aforementioned repairs are visible, as well as another horizontal repair about 6 inches long on the right edge of the second canvas, and scattered spots of retouching, many of which are slightly visible to the naked eye. Offered in a pair of dark wooden frames with decorative giltwood borders with artist nameplates with dates and titles.

An important Counter-Reformation painter in Bologna, Felice Torelli was known for large biblical history paintings like the present lots. He was inspired by the Carracci family and studied their Bolognese works along with the works of his contemporaries there. He taught major artists of the next generation including Ubaldo and Gaetano Gandolfi. The present two Old Testament scenes both treat the theme of lust that was ultimately punished.
