Still life of flowers in a terracotta vase before a stone niche

oil on canvas

canvas: 57 by 45 1/4 in.; 144.8 by 114.9 cm.

framed: 64 1/2 by 51 1/4 in.; 163.8 by 130.2 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The still life image reads well beneath clear varnish with the textures of petals and leaves retained. A few retouches are visible to the naked eye at each corner in the dark background but are not distracting. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and streaky, but there appears to be an earlier campaign of restoration throughout the dark background to strengthen the blacks. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
