oil on panel

panel: 27 5/8 by 23 1/4 in.; 70.2 by 59.1 cm.

framed: 34 ½ by 30 ½ in.; 87.6 by 77.5 cm.

The panel consists of three vertical planks and is flat, stable, and cradled on the reverse, though the panel has separated slightly from the left edge of the frame. The panel joins are faintly visible to the naked eye but not distracting. A few nicks in the panel at the upper edge are also visible but no other retouching can be seen with the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish fluoresces unevenly, but very few small dots of retouching at visible on the woman's eye and mouth. The blacks of her dress have sunken so that the detail of the fabric is only visible under UV light. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a carved ebonized wood frame with gilt inner liner.
