Portrait of a man, unfinished

oil on panel, unframed

panel: 12 1/4 by 9 3/8 in.; 31 by 23.3 cm.

The panel is stable and uncradled; it is about 1/2 inch thick. The painting is under a clear, even varnish, though under ultraviolet light one can see it is slightly uneven. Some areas of the paint layer beneath appear thin but this is the unfinished nature of the painting; the paint in the background and in the face remains well-preserved. A few very thin vertical scratches are visible under close inspection, as is a subtle craqueleure pattern. There is no evidence of previous restoration or retouching visible under ultraviolet light or to the naked eye. Offered unframed.

It has been suggested that the sitter could be the French novelist George Sand, who famously dressed as a man in accordance with her pen name but was in fact Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, a woman.
