Portrait of a man and his dog

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 41 1/4 by 30 3/4 in.; 105.1 by 78.2 cm.

The canvas appears to be thinly lined and is stable on its stretcher. The edges of the canvas have been reinforced with a thin strip of tape. The painting, though slightly dirty, presents a strong and lovely image overall. There is a faint network of craquelure throughout the surface, and there is a very thin but stable crack in the figure's hair at upper left. Some scattered retouches have slightly discolored and are visible to the naked eye scattered in the background and in the figure's face and hands. A couple of restored repairs are visible in the background, including a rectangular repair in the lower left background (about 3 by 2 inches), as well as a spot in the upper left corner and near the upper right edge. Some faint old frame abrasion is found at the upper edge, and some thinness has appeared here and there throughout. Inspection under UV reveals a slightly milky varnish. Scattered broadly applied retouching is visible here and there in the background, including the aforementioned repairs, in the contours around the figure's form, and a more concentrated network to the right of the sitter's head. There are more finely applied thin strokes of retouching to the figure's face (primarily in the shadows and contours), a few scattered strokes in his hair and in the dark tones of his costume, some strokes in his hands, and a few small scattered spots in the head of the dog. Retouching is also visible to the extreme edges, possibly to address old frame abrasion. Offered unframed.
