a tondo, oil on panel

panel diameter: 28 3/4 in.; 73 cm.

framed diameter: 35 in.; 88.9 cm.

The panel is stable, uncradled, and has a slight convex warp. It is supported on the reverse by two wooden battens. The painting has not been restored in some time. The overall image reads well and strong beneath an old discolored, dirty, and dulled varnish. There are a scattered holes from old (inactive) insect activity here and there, mostly concentrated in the left half. A few scattered fine cracks are visible, consistent with age, the two most noticeable at the center of the upper and lower edges. Some scattered small losses are visible at the extreme edges of the panel, and otherwise just a few small scattered spots of loss here and there, some of which have been filled and retouched. Some of the original gilding in the halos of the figures has thinned with age, but overall the painting appears to retain good detail throughout. Old scattered very small spots of retouching have slightly discolored and are visible to the naked eye, though these appear largely cosmetic in nature. Inspection under UV reveals a thick old varnish that fluoresces unevenly in some areas and impedes some inspection. Some strokes of strengthening and spots of retouching are visible in the darker details of the background/foliage, including an area to the left of the angel's head at upper left, in the flowers held by the angel at right and in the background to the left of that angel's head. Some strokes of retouching are visible scattered in the costumes. Offered in a simply carved gilt frame with some nicks.
