Madonna and Child with a book

oil on panel

panel: 14 1/4 by 10 1/8 in.; 36.2 by 25.7 cm.

framed: 27 3/4 by 24 1/8 in.; 70.5 by 61.3 cm.

The panel is uncradled and stable with a convex bow. The image reads very well beneath clear varnish, with bold colors and shading in the fabrics retained. No retouching is visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish fluoresces unevenly in a small area below the Virgin's proper left arm, and dots of cosmetic retouching are visible throughout the background. A one-inch horizontal repair at lower right is visible under UV, and a few spots of retouching are visible in the red of the Virgin's dress, but the faces and figures are in good condition. An older circle of repair is barely visible under UV in the lower left, indicating there may have been an earlier campaign of restoration that is no longer legible through the varnish. The painting should be hung in its present condition. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
