Frigates in a storm off a rocky coast

oil on canvas

canvas: 25 by 30 in.; 63.5 by 76.2 cm.

framed: 35 1/2 by 40 in.; 90.2 by 101.6 cm.

The canvas is lined and taut on its stretcher. The seascape reads relatively well although areas of the paint layer have suffered abrasion and parts of the sky and waves have thinned so that the reddish-brown ground layer is visible. In the left half of the painting there is a noticeable fine pattern of craquelure that has possibly caused lifting in the past, though it is stable now. A repaired horizontal tear or loss measuring about 2 inches is visible in the center. Under UV inspection, a recent campaign of retouching and repairs is visible in the aforementioned areas and around all 4 edges, with some larger spots in the lower half of the waves and in the right half of the upper right cloud. The varnish may obscure older retouching as well. Offered in a decoratively carved dark wood frame.
