oil on canvas

canvas: 28 1/4 by 36 1/2 in.; 71.8 by 92.8 cm.

framed: 32 3/4 by 41 1/4 in.; 83.1 by 104.8 cm.

This large canvas is stable and planar with an even, glossy varnish. There are some areas at the top which appear to be slight blanching or rubbing of the varnish, though it is not bothersome. The surface has flattened somewhat in the relining but the colors remain vibrant. Ultraviolet light reveals some unevenness in the varnish in the background as well as some retouching in the figures, mostly in the outlines and backgrounds around the staffage itself. Overall the painting presents well and is offered in a carved giltwood frame.
