Description
Property from the Collection of David and Louise Carter
Circle of Jan van Goyen
Dune landscape with travelers on a path and a view of The Hague in the distance
oil on panel
panel: 19 5/8 by 30 1/4 in.; 49.8 by 76.5 cm.
framed: 27 5/8 by 38 3/8 in.; 70.2 by 97.5 cm.
This painting is closely comparable in composition to a signed and dated (1638) panel by Jan van Goyen.1 It seems to have been painted by an artist in van Goyen's closer circle. Although the present lot is of smaller dimensions, it shares many of the same details as the prime version, including the falconers in left foreground, the elegant figures paused on their travels, and a vast view of The Hague and the city's Grote Kerk beyond.
1. Oil on panel, 58 by 97.5 cm. See H-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, Amsterdam 1973, vol. II, p. 160, cat. no. 325, reproduced.
