Dune landscape with travelers on a path and a view of The Hague in the distance

oil on panel

panel: 19 5/8 by 30 1/4 in.; 49.8 by 76.5 cm.

framed: 27 5/8 by 38 3/8 in.; 70.2 by 97.5 cm.

Condition report

The panel is made of two horizontal boards, joined at the center. The panel is planar, and the join on the reverse is supported by wooden battens. All four edges of the panel are beveled. The painting presents a good image overall. The varnish is somewhat dirty, and some areas have thinned over time and have lost some definition. Inspection under UV reveals retouching to address the horizontal join, as well as some scattered retouching, largely concentrated in the sky. Offered in a carved wooden frame with a carved gilded liner.

Catalogue note

This painting is closely comparable in composition to a signed and dated (1638) panel by Jan van Goyen.1  It seems to have been painted by an artist in van Goyen's closer circle.  Although the present lot is of smaller dimensions, it shares many of the same details as the prime version, including the falconers in left foreground, the elegant figures paused on their travels, and a vast view of The Hague and the city's Grote Kerk beyond.
