Deposition of Christ

tempera on canvas

canvas: 44 by 36 1/2 in.; 111.8 by 92.7 cm.

framed: 51 1/2 by 44 in.; 130.8 by 111.8 cm.

The thick canvas is unlined, without a preparatory layer of gesso or ground. The image reads well with the canvas weave visible throughout. A few areas of the paint surface have abraded due to thinness, such as on the Virgin's shoulder. Under UV inspection, a few small repairs in the background are visible, as well as some retouching to strengthen the outlines of faces and bodies, for example on Christ's foot and Mary Magdalene's nose, and a few other scattered spots to address small losses. Overall, considering the tempera on canvas technique, the painting is nicely preserved and can hang in its present state. Offered in a wooden frame painted in faux tortoiseshell with gilt inner and outer borders.

Paintings executed in tempera on canvas were relatively rare in the Italian Renaissance, and were often reserved for processional banners for religious celebrations. The present lot may be one such example, as was the banner by Luca Signorelli sold at Sotheby's New York, 26 January 2012, lot 15.
