The Miraculous Draught of Fishes

oil on panel

panel: 34 ½ by 48 in.; 87.6 by 121.9 cm.

framed: 39 ⅛ by 52 ⅞ in.; 99.4 by 147 cm.

The panel is made of three horizontal boards. It is planar, uncradled, and beveled on all four edges. Remnants of old support battens remain on the reverse, and there appear to be traces of adhesive between the joins. The overall image reads clearly beneath a dirty, yellowed, and dulled varnish. There are scattered losses along the wood grain, primarily in the lower left register and in the head of the figure near center, with some larger losses near the upper right edget. Thin cracks have formed along the joins, with another crack near the center of the right edge, and one running through the seagull at upper center. Some of the retouching has discolored and is visible to the naked eye, such as along some of the joins. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouches here and there, mostly concentrated at the aforementioned joins, and others scattered in the figures and background/sky, including an old retouched scratch in the upper right. Offered in a dark wood frame with a gilt liner.

The composition of this work follows that of Rubens' sketch in the National Gallery, London (NG 680). The original design is based on the central panel of a triptych made by Rubens for Notre Dame au delà de la Dyle, the church of the Mechelen Fishmongers’ Guild. Rubens' oil sketch then served as the design for an engraving by Schelte à Bolswert, who worked for Rubens in Antwerp.
