The Meeting of Christ and Saint John the Baptist

oil on copper

copper: 15 ⅛ by 11 ¼ in.; 38.5 by 28.8 cm.

framed: 20 ⅛ by 15 ⅝ in.; 51 by 39.7 cm.

The copper plate is planar and stable. The painting appears to be in good condition overall, with a good retention of coloring and detail. The surface is somewhat dirty and the varnish slightly dulled. Some frame abrasion is visible at the extreme edges. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that fluoresces unevenly, particularly in the foliage along the left edge. No recent retouching is clearly visible, but there are perhaps some old scattered strokes of retouching in the foliage along the right edge, in the background between the figures and in the lower foreground. The painting can hang in its present condition. Offered in a dark painted wood frame with gilt edging and a gilt liner.
