oil on canvas

canvas: 35 by 27 ¾ in.; 89 by 70.5 cm.

framed: 40 by 32 in.; 101.5 by 81.3 cm.

The canvas has been relined and is stable, though on the reverse one can see a few areas where the glue relining has pulled off of the original canvas. The painting has a heavy varnish which has dirtied somewhat but still has a nice shine to it. The paint layer is thick, with areas of impasto, and colors remain very vivid. There are a few areas of craqueleure, most noticeably in the upper right quadrant, in the background, and in the upper left corner, though the paint is stable and this isn't bothersome. Under ultraviolet light there are very few recent restorations which flouresce, mostly some addressing craqueleure in the lower left corner and some areas of the ledge in the lower right corner. In the background one can see some unevenness that flouresces, perhaps evidence of an old restoration campaign. Offered in a carved black frame, this painting can be hung as is.
