Pauwels Casteels was active in Antwerp in the mid-seventeenth century, and was admitted to the St. Luke's Guild there in 1649. He was best known for battle scenes and history paintings, and his mythological scenes tended to include bacchanalia, which may explain the unusual inclusion of Bacchus and a satyr within a flower garland. Casteels may have painted the flowers himself, or, as was more common in the period, he likely collaborated with a still life specialist, who for now remains anonymous.
