Saint Jerome in his study

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 ¾ by 44 ¼ in.; 83.1 by 112 cm.

framed: 41 ⅞ by 53 ½ in.; 106.2 by 135.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well beneath older varnish that is blanching in the bottom half of the composition. In the upper right corner, repairs have caused the canvas to buckle, and there is a puncture/tear on the crucifix at upper left, as well as a repaired puncture at center. On the book at lower left, there is a circle of paint loss and the surrounding area is actively flaking. Craquelure is visible throughout in uneven patterns but all is stable except for the aforementioned spot of lifting. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears milky and may obscure other retouching, but a few circular spots of repair are visible on the open book, near the figure's hand, and retouching in the black background on the right edge. Offered in an decoratively carved giltwood frame.

This composition was made popular in the first half of the sixteenth century by Marinus van Reymerswaele, and it inspired a number of examples by his close circle and following. Among the artist's most well-known autograph versions is the signed panel in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
