The canvas has a recent glue relining and is stable and planar. The varnish remains bright but there are some areas of unevenness, particularly in the background, and some small areas where the varnish has blanched slightly, such as in the upper left background and lower right, beneath the sitter's shoulder. The fluid brushwork and thick paint remain vibrant. Under ultraviolet light one can see some areas of retouching, mostly to strengthen darker areas such as in the shadows on the right side of the sitter's face; in the background upper right within the oval; in some parts of the sitter's hair; and a few shadowy areas of the drapery. These restorations are well done and not noticeable with the naked eye. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
