Portrait of a young woman seated at a desk with three birds

oil on canvas

canvas: 17 by 12 ⅞ in.; 43.2 by 32.7 cm.

framed: 22 ½ by 20 ⅛ in.; 57.2 by 51.1 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well beneath glossy varnish, with pronounced craquelure throughout that is stable. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and impedes further inspection, though the varnish fluoresces unevenly in a horizontal line along the top edge suggesting retouching to the stretcher bar line, and other retouching is faintly visible in the lower right corner near the girl's elbow. The varnish is thick and could perhaps be toned down, but otherwise the painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame with some nicks and losses.

This composition is inspired by a similar painting in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. 1960.6.19), that was quite popular in the late eighteenth century, though today some scholars do not believe it is the autograph work of Greuze.
