Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing a pearl necklace with a heart pendant, in a painted oval

dated center right: 164*

oil on canvas, unlined

canvas: 29 ½ by 25 in.; 75 by 63.5 cm.

framed: 34 ½ by 29 ¾ in.; 87.7 by 75.5 cm.

The canvas is unlined and stable. There is a varnish which has yellowed and become uneven; a few drips can be seen under raking light and in the lower right corner there are two scratches to the varnish, one of which goes into the paint surface (and has covered the final digit of the date). There is also a spot of paint loss in the background just above her head, less than 1 cm. in diameter. The paint layer has thinned a bit and the weave of the canvas is visible, particularly in the lighter tones, though it is not bothersome. There is beautiful impasto in a number of the details, including in the jewelry and in the sheer layer of her dress. Under ultraviolet light there are barely if any retouchings which flouresce; the varnish appears quite milky and even. Overall this painting presents well but has not been touched in some time. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
