Portrait of a Capuchin monk in a library

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 33 ½ by 28 ¼ in.; 85.1 by 71.8 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well beneath the varnish with details in the face retained. A few diagonal lines of loss running from the upper right corner, the longest of which measures about 12 inches, are visible as the old retouching has discolored. A smaller spot of loss is visible on the top center edge, and a few smaller lines at the bottom left corner. Under UV inspection, retouching is visible along the aforementioned old losses, which extend further than is visible to the naked eye, with several lines of repair running from the upper right to bottom left corner. A few spots of retouching are visible in the face. The painting would likely benefit from fresh retouching to the discolored repairs. Offered unframed.
