Follower of David Teniers the Younger

This composition is based on Teniers's own family portrait in which he depicted himself as the viola player (sold London, Sotheby's, 9 July 2008, lot 23). The woman in brown and blue leaning over the table and reading, however, is not present in Teniers's painting and instead derives from Young Woman Reading a Letter by French artist Jean Raoux, a version of which is now at the Musée du Louvre.
