The versatile Pietro della Vecchia, formerly erroneously called Pietro Muttoni, became an important religious painter in 1630s Venice, but also specialized in grotesques and head studies of figures, like the present lot. He was married to Clorinda Regnier, daughter of the Caravaggesque painter Nicolas, and herself an accomplished artist.
