Head of a young man with a feathered cap

oil on unstretched canvas, unframed, a fragment

canvas: 17 ¼ by 17 in.; 43.8 by 43.2 cm.

The canvas fragment is lined, but it is unstretched and unframed. There are some frayed elements at the edges. The painting reads somewhat clearly beneath an old discolored varnish, and the surface is dirty. There is a puncture in the upper right corner, and there is a loss to the paint surface in the lower right corner. Additional losses are at the upper edge, as well as in the background near the edge of the feather, and there are some thin scratches in the upper left. The paint surface has been slightly pressed with age. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish with some scattered and more broadly applied retouching in the darks of the background.
