Odoardo Toscani

Rome 1859 - 1914 Smyrna, Turkey

Constantinople, a view of the Galata Bridge at sunset

signed lower left: Toscani

oil on panel

panel: 12 by 21 ¼ in.; 26.7 by 54 cm.

framed: 17 ½ by 28 ¾ in.; 44.5 by 73 cm.

The panel is about 3/8 in. thick and beveled on four edges. It has bowed a bit horizontally, but it remains stable and the paint layer appears unaffected. The varnish is even but has lost most of its shine; the painting is slightly dirty. The colors remain extremely vivid and details remain throughout the work. Under ultraviolet light an area in the sky in the upper left corner flouresces, but otherwise there appears to be very little, if any, restoration. Offered in a carved and painted gold frame, this painting can be hung as is.
